Accessibility Guidelines

Following accessibility guidelines can help a long way for helping individuals. When an indivdual interacts with a game, a three step model occurs. 1) Receive stimuli, 2) determine response, and 3) provide input when playing. Players with impairments struggle to interact with this model.

Some accomodation strategies recommended is to divide the model into high/low level strategies. These strategies can help players address problems within the game. Trade offs may occur when applying, so it is best to accomodate these strategies early in development.

Common issues disabled players face include inability to follow a storyline, unable to complete a puzzle or task, unable to determine how game is played, inability to use adaptive hardware and more. This affects groups who struggle with auditory, visual, mobility and cognitive functions. Developers should accomodate to these issues and support assistive software such as screen readers to support players in game.
